I love to share music and to that end teach guitar lessons and mandolin lessons locally. I am also occasional public performer. For many years I led the Ithaca Guitar League, and in that vein continue to sponsor various local House Concerts and related public events. These days I am concentrating on recording and producing CD's and Instructional material for my growing backlog of guitar compositions to be available on-line. Here is an overview of the instructional products you can find on this site. Thank you for your interest!

Purchase Tab:

I have compiled tab into a variety of collections that are offered for sale. These are professionally notated with both the sheet music and tablature as shown in this sample. The tunes are transcribed just as I play them, delivered in PDF format, and are best learned by purchasing one of the corresponding audio or video packages.

Lessons:

Interested in taking private lessons at my music studio and live in the Ithaca NY / Dryden NY / Cortland NY area?  Please send me an EMAIL

I have also successfully taught "distance learners" via Skype. Customized individual on-line lessons can be purchased here. When you purchase a lesson we will schedule a mutually convenient time via email. I will also make any related materials available for download prior to the lesson.

Free Video:

Please take a few minutes to check out the sample instructional videos on my YouTube Channel

I find that most people learn best by seeing and hearing how a song is played. My videos are designed to provide a high quality performance to supplement learning from the tab. I don't really stop and show all the fingerings. The tab shows you pretty clearly what to do. You can always email if you have any questions.

Philosophy and Approach:

I consider my tunes to be "intermediate" in difficulty level. That of course is relative and easy to say once you know them :-)  I have learned from many people over the years: occasional lessons and workshops, books, magazines, jam sessions, watching performers, transcribing songs, and lot's of practice. Mix it all up, let simmer for  awhile, and these tunes are what's come out. Although I put my name down as composer, I consider these tunes 'gifts' as much as anything. When inspiration comes ... I simply make an effort to steward the results: connect the parts, write it down, and get it recorded. I hope you find them enjoyable and something you might want to add to your own repertoire. The pieces are accessible and can certainly help advance your playing.

About open tunings: My pieces are in a variety of tunings. I spend most of my time playing in standard tuning, and almost always when playing with other musicians. However, after years of resistance to open tunings I found that once explored they really opened up a whole new world of sonic and harmonic possibilities. Like everything you can stagnate and over use new licks, however I found the new options extremely inspiring and enticing. Also to my surprise, I do not find it confusing switching back and forth between various tunings ... although one could make the case that having a guitar dedicated to a particular tuning can save a lot in strings :-) Some of the tunings I use regularly are (low to high):
  • C G C G C D
  • C G C G C E
  • D G D G B D
  • D A D F# A D
  • D A D G A D
  • D A D G B E
